FRANCE

France has long been considered the epicenter of the audiovisual industry in Europe, not only due to the volume of its productions but also for the quality and global appeal of its content. In 2024, the sector’s sales reached an impressive €203.4 million, marking a milestone as it surpassed the €200 million revenue threshold for the third time in 30 years. This achievement reflects the unstoppable growth and international impact of French audiovisual production.

What is truly remarkable, however, is the phenomenon of French fiction. With €74.5 million in exports, France continues to lead international markets, particularly in Western Europe. This success is no coincidence—a 34.5% increase in international co-productions has positioned France as one of the most sought-after partners for any audiovisual project. As a true engine of innovation and creativity, France opens doors to new opportunities for collaboration and expansion.

Despite the rise of streaming platforms, linear television remains a dominant force in French daily life, and its stronghold on fiction is indisputable. In 2023, national broadcasters aired over 32,000 hours of fiction, with French series achieving record-breaking audiences. 99 out of the 100 most-watched fiction programs were national productions, with France 3 dominating prime time. The biggest success of the year was HPI – Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (TF1), which captivated 10.4 million viewers. This level of audience engagement demonstrates that French audiences not only consume local content but prefer it over any other option.

France is currently experiencing a historic boom in audiovisual production investment, reaching a record €681.4 million in 2023, a 26.7% increase from the previous year. This expansion is being driven by major market players such as France Télévisions, TF1, and Canal+, as well as streaming giants, which have doubled their investment in French productions, ushering in a new era of competitiveness and dynamism. The market is evolving and growing in response to shifting audience demands.

France remains a key powerhouse in the global audiovisual landscape. With its unique approach—blending tradition and cutting-edge innovation—the country continues to be an essential strategic partner for any project seeking creativity, quality, and international visibility. Its growing investment, strong fiction sector, and rapidly evolving market make France a top destination for producers, creators, and distributors worldwide.

CANADA

Canada has established itself as one of the leading players in the global audiovisual industry. Thanks to its cultural diversity, tax incentives, and technical capabilities, the country has become an attractive destination for both national and international productions. The audiovisual media production industry not only represents a significant source of employment and economic development but also plays a crucial role in shaping the country’s cultural identity. One of the key aspects of Canada’s audiovisual industry is its ability to attract foreign investment, particularly from Hollywood and streaming platforms, which has contributed to the sector’s growth.

According to the latest data from the “Profile 2024” report by the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA), the audiovisual sector contributed over $11 billion CAD to Canada’s GDP ($9.58 billion CAD in 2023/24), attracting $5.6 billion CAD in foreign investment through international productions, sales, and co-productions. Furthermore, due to new regulations from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), streaming platforms are expected to start contributing to Canadian production funds beginning in 2025.

Given the industry’s importance in the country, recent discussions have emerged regarding the definition and future of Canadian Content (CanCon). Findings from the report “New Futures for Canadian Content” highlight the need to strengthen public policies that encourage investment in local productions and the preservation of intellectual property within Canada. At the same time, there is an ongoing debate about whether the current criteria for defining Canadian content are still relevant in the context of globalization and the expansion of digital platforms.

The industry also faces challenges in terms of representation and diversity. Audiovisual media is a powerful tool for expressing identity, and it is essential to ensure that Indigenous, Francophone, and diverse communities are integral to its narratives. This inclusivity has led to a richer and more representative content offering, allowing Canadian stories to resonate both nationally and internationally.
